Ducted vs Split System: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Both systems heat and cool effectively — the real decision comes down to how many rooms you want covered, what your roof space looks like, and whether you mind a visible indoor unit on the wall.

When a split system makes more sense

If you mainly want one or two areas covered — a main living room, or a bedroom that gets uncomfortably warm — a split system is the more cost-effective choice. It's a faster install, usually completed in under a day, and you can add more units to other rooms later without redoing the whole system.

When ducted air conditioning makes more sense

If you're renovating, building, or want every room covered without a wall unit in each one, ducted is usually the better fit. The trade-off is a bigger job — roof space access, ducting runs, and typically one to two days on site — but you end up with whole-home coverage from a single outdoor unit and no visible indoor heads.

What about running costs?

A well-zoned ducted system can be efficient because you only condition the rooms in use, but an unzoned system that runs the whole house at once will generally cost more to run than a single split system cooling just the room you're in. If keeping running costs down is the priority and you don't need every room covered, a split system (or a zoned ducted system) is usually the more economical choice.
